Le madrigal à cinq voix Vestiva i colli de Palestrina, publié en 1566, a connu un grand succès en son temps : de nombreux arrangements, contrafacta et diminutions en ont été réalisés à la fin du XVIème siècle.
C’est dans cette perspective que la présente Fantaisie est conçue, la formation violon et guitare permettant diminutions solistes et réduction de la polyphonie. Prenant pour prétexte la quarte de l’incipit du madrigal, une harmonie « quartale » se développe, sur laquelle se greffent des éléments motiviques empruntés au madrigal de Palestrina ainsi qu’aux diminutions de Rognoni, paraphrasés dans un esprit de libre invention.
Palestrina’s five-voice madrigal Vestiva i colli (published in 1566) was very successful in its time: numerous arrangements, contrafacta and diminutions were produced at the end of the 16th century.
In that perspective the present Fantaisie has been intended, the violin and guitar instrumental formation allowing both soloist diminutions and polyphony reduction. Using the fourth of the madrigal’s incipit, as a pretext, a quartal harmony develops itself, upon which small motives from Palestrina’s madrigal as well as from Rognoni’s diminutions are added, who are then paraphrased in a spirit of free invention.
